FAQ's

We have provided some frequently asked questions that may provide more information. Please call us to setup a free consultation at (858) 729-0692 or email us at info@sdfamilyservices.com.

THERAPY PROCESS:

What can I expect for my initial consultation?
An initial consultation is basically just a chance for us to meet with you and gather information to determine how best to meet your needs and for both of us to determine if we would be a good fit.

If I start therapy, does that mean I’m crazy or messed up?
Actually, no. It is usually the most healthy people that choose to get involved in therapy. People who are smart and strong are generally more motivated to better themselves and that’s exactly the benefit that therapy provides.

Will I have to go on medication?
Absolutely not! In fact, we do not even prescribe medication in our office. On rare occasion, when we believe medication is needed, we will refer the individual to a psychiatrist to determine if medication is an appropriate course of action.

What are the credentials of your therapists?
All therapists working with San Diego Family Services are either licensed practitioners or un-licensed professionals that are registered with the appropriate governing boards.  Our therapists have a wide range of expertise areas and each therapist only practices within this range of expertise.

What about confidentiality? Is everything I say confidential?
We are required to protect the confidentiality of communication with our clients. As a client, you will be guaranteed to protection of confidentiality within the boundaries of the client/counselor relationship. Any disclosure will be made with your full written, informed consent and will be limited to a specific period of time. The only limitations to confidentiality occur when a counselor feels that there is clear and imminent danger to you or to others, or when legal requirements demand that confidential information be disclosed such as a court case. Whenever possible, you will be informed before confidential information is revealed.

What about services for children and teens?
If your child is showing signs that he or she is having problems, it is a good idea to bring them in for an evaluation. No child is too young for an evaluation. Prevention now is better than repair later. They may be acting in ways that are not typical for them, such as bed-wetting, separation anxiety, aggressive behavior, or school-related problems. It is likely that your children have been trying to show you that something is wrong by acting in these ways, instead of coming right out and telling you personally. Family crises, such as a separation, divorce, and death are often difficult for children to handle on their own, and they need your help in learning how to deal with these situations.

GROUPS:

When do your groups meet?
We offer groups at all different times including evenings and weekends, so we can accommodate everyone. When you sign up for a group, we ask that you let us know what time is best for you and we will do our best to accommodate you.

How long does counseling/groups last?
It generally depends on the person or family and their needs. Most groups are time-limited and last 8-12 weeks. Other groups are ongoing and people can join or leave as appropriate.
Counseling varies from case to case and depends on each individual and the rate of progress. It is impossible to determine how long it will last without knowing the details of your situation and your needs.

FEES & INSURANCE:

Do you take insurance?
Yes, we accept most insurance, and the amount coverage depending on the individual plan. Even if we are not listed with your insurance company, we may still be covered as an out-of-network provider. We can also see about getting added to your insurance. We will be happy to talk with your insurance company and see if we can make arrangements for coverage.

How much does it cost? How do we pay?
Costs for services vary depending upon a number of factors, including who you see and what services you are seeking. In addition, we offer a sliding scale for low-income families and students. When you come in for a consultation, we will determine the appropriate fee structure for you. We also accept many forms of insurance which cover most of the costs.

We accept checks, credit cards, and cash.
